Now that it’s summer, we are all trying to do things that involve being in the sun! Yay! I love when the grass is green, the sun is bright and the air is warm. Living in Maine makes me try to enjoy the summer heat while we have it, because winters here are no joke. They are long, cold, dark and did I mention...long? Yes. But this just makes me savor the spring, summer and fall months while they are here all the more!
As a mom of two toddlers, I like to get out and do stuff every once in a while. This week we went to the beach with their cousins and my wonderful sister-in-law and it was super fun. When we go places, we try to keep it as budget friendly as possible, which means finding free activities to do and packing a lunch to eat while we are there!
So we went to Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. We walked the trail, saw a couple of lighthouses, played on the beach, found a great swing set and enjoyed a lovely picnic!
It is always nice to get the cousins together, be out in the sun for a healthy dose of vitamin D and getting some Mama talking time in all at once. There is definitely something special about the cousin relationships that we get to see between our kiddos and I always come away from a visit with my sister-in-law with new appreciation for her friendship as well! It really is a win-win!
But does getting out and doing fun stuff concern you that you may stray from your goal of a healthy diet? This shouldn’t worry you, because packing is so easy and there are all kinds of keto friendly foods that you can easily include in your cooler!
Let’s dive in!
My sister-in-law and I are both Keto right now so I offered to bring her some lunch to share. And here’s what I packed:
-Mac's salt and pepper pork rinds
-½ Avocado and salt to dip
-salami, cream cheese, green pepper wraps (so easy and faster to put together than a sandwich!)
-strawberries
-Keto Chocolate Chip cookies
-Almonds
-fresh Mozzarella pearls marinated in herbs and oil

Deborah and I enjoyed all the foods we ate and were totally satisfied. We didn’t feel like we were missing out at all either! This is proof that you can go to the beach and keep your diet healthy and within your macros! You shouldn't skip out on having fun because you’re worried about what to do for food.
A few tips:
-When you are going to be somewhere that there is fun, non-keto food, be sure to bring fun and delicious food that is also keto friendly. The examples of this in our lunch were the strawberries and chocolate chip cookies (I used this recipe- https://www.fatforweightloss.com.au/keto-chocolate-chip-cookies/?fbclid=IwAR1ZgIXIDrP61l7NqWILlmLBidnuz2vJaZmj_6bLhVQmm3OcS5NxRyq1HxI ). I don’t have berries or cookies everyday, but when I do I really try to enjoy them a lot. I actually try to avoid cookies most days to keep my weight loss going, but I treat myself when I know there will be non-keto temptations around!
-When you’re out doing something, try to stay busy and keep moving. We had a great time walking around with the kids and also being active on the swings and running around in the huge lawn as well.
-Always pack more water than you think you need! Especially when you have kids with you, it’s super important that everyone stays hydrated. But when you aren’t properly hydrated, your body could confuse dehydration for hunger and you may fall into the trap of eating when you really should just chug some water.
Here are some more of my favorite on the go snacks that I take when we are out and about keeping busy:
-beef sticks
-mozzerella sticks
-pre-portioned macadamia nuts, almonds or pistachios
-Choc Zero chocolate bars (especially if I foresee us making a Starbucks
stop!)
-Sugar free sweet pickles
I hope this post was an encouragement that summer can be fun and tasty. I hope you can take these ideas and pack up to head to the beach soon. So get out there, embrace summer and all the activities it has to offer including food. Keto food!
